Ion pair
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006643
A positively charged ion and a negatively charged electron or ion that are created simultaneously from a neutral atom or molecule by an ionizing event. In the atmosphere, ion pairs are continuously formed by cosmic rays, solar radiation, and radioactive decay. The rate of ion pair production is a fundamental parameter in atmospheric electricity and ionospheric physics.
