Recombination energy
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008447
The energy released when a positive ion and a free electron combine to form a neutral atom or molecule. This process is a primary mechanism for energy transfer in the upper atmosphere, particularly within the ionosphere, where solar radiation continuously ionizes atmospheric gases. The released energy appears as kinetic energy of the resulting particles or as emitted photons, contributing to phenomena like airglow.
