Photoionization
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007915
The process by which an atom or molecule loses an electron due to the absorption of a photon, resulting in the formation of an ion. This occurs when the photon's energy is sufficient to overcome the electron's binding energy. In the Earth's upper atmosphere, photoionization by solar ultraviolet and X-ray radiation is the primary mechanism for creating the ionosphere.
