Electronic transitions

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005336

The movement of an electron from one energy level to another within an atom or molecule, often involving the absorption or emission of a photon. These transitions are responsible for the characteristic spectral lines observed in atmospheric gases, which are used in remote sensing to identify atmospheric constituents. For example, the absorption of ultraviolet radiation by ozone involves electronic transitions.
