Line absorption
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006970
The absorption of electromagnetic radiation by atmospheric gases at specific, narrow wavelengths, resulting in distinct dark lines in a spectrum. This phenomenon occurs when photons possess the exact energy required to excite an atom or molecule to a higher energy state. Each gas has a unique spectral fingerprint of absorption lines, used for remote sensing.
