Electro-osmosis

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005337

The movement of a polar liquid, such as water, through a porous material or across a membrane in response to an applied external electric field. This phenomenon occurs in materials with charged surfaces, like clay soils, where the electric field exerts a force on the mobile ions within the diffuse layer of the liquid, dragging the bulk fluid along. Electro-osmosis is a factor in soil moisture dynamics and can be used in geotechnical engineering to dewater or stabilize fine-grained soils.
