Osmosis
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007751
The net movement of a solvent, typically water, across a semipermeable membrane from an area of lower solute concentration to an area of higher solute concentration. In atmospheric science, this process governs the hygroscopic growth of aerosol particles and the equilibrium size of cloud droplets containing dissolved substances. This phenomenon, known as the solute effect, lowers the saturation vapor pressure required for a droplet to exist in equilibrium with the surrounding air.
