Reynolds effect

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008566

The influence of the Reynolds number on the behavior of a fluid, particularly the transition from laminar to turbulent flow as velocity increases or viscosity decreases. In the atmosphere, this effect governs the formation of turbulence in the boundary layer, the flow of air around obstacles, and the drag experienced by falling precipitation. The critical Reynolds number at which this transition occurs depends on the specific flow geometry.
