Workman-Reynolds effect
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010851
A mechanism for charge separation in clouds that contributes to atmospheric electrification. During the freezing of supercooled water droplets containing dilute ionic solutions, a strong electrical potential difference develops across the ice-water interface. This process, where ions are preferentially incorporated into the ice or concentrated in the remaining liquid, is considered a contributor to the buildup of electrical charge within thunderstorms that leads to lightning.
