Osmosis
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002648
The passive movement of solvent molecules, typically water, across a semipermeable membrane from an area of higher solvent concentration to an area of lower solvent concentration. This process continues until equilibrium is reached, driven by the difference in chemical potential. In drilling fluids, osmosis can influence the stability of shales by controlling water movement into or out of the formation.
