Osmotic pressure

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002649

The pressure difference that develops across a semipermeable membrane separating two solutions of different solute concentrations. In drilling, it describes the potential for water movement between a drilling fluid and a shale formation due to differences in salinity. This pressure can be controlled by adjusting the salinity of the drilling fluid to prevent shale swelling.
