Activity of aqueous solutions
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000055
A thermodynamic measure of the effective concentration of water in an aqueous drilling fluid, influencing the movement of water between the fluid and the formation. It determines the osmotic potential, which can cause shales to swell or dehydrate. This property is adjusted by adding salts like sodium chloride or calcium chloride to the mud.
