Saltwater mud
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003234
A drilling fluid formulated with a high concentration of dissolved salts, primarily sodium chloride, to inhibit hydration and dispersion of reactive shales. This type of mud maintains borehole stability in formations containing salt beds or sensitive clays. Its density and viscosity are adjusted by varying the salt content and adding polymers.
