Active sulfide

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004218

Soluble sulfide ions present in a drilling fluid, originating from formation influxes of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) or from the thermal degradation of mud additives. These reactive sulfides pose a risk of hydrogen embrittlement and sulfide stress cracking in drill pipe and other steel components. Their concentration is monitored and controlled by adding sulfide scavengers, such as zinc or iron compounds, which precipitate the sulfides into inert, insoluble forms.
