Inert sulfide
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001972
A metal sulfide, such as pyrite, that stays chemically stable and does not release hydrogen sulfide when a mud sample is acidified, so it adds no gas hazard at the rig. Inert sulfides occur naturally in some drilled formations and do not register in acid-evolution sulfide tests such as the Garrett Gas Train. They contrast with soluble sulfides, meaning dissolved H2S, HS- and S2-, which are the toxic and corrosive forms controlled by pH and scavengers.
