Sulfate-reducing bacteria, a type of anaerobic microorganism that reduces sulfate to sulfide, often hydrogen sulfide. These bacteria can cause corrosion of drilling equipment and souring of reservoirs by producing toxic and corrosive H2S gas. Their activity is monitored in drilling fluids to prevent operational issues.
