Sulfate-reducing bacteria
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003683
Anaerobic microorganisms that metabolize sulfates, converting them into hydrogen sulfide gas, which is highly corrosive and toxic. These bacteria are a common cause of microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) in oilfield equipment and can sour reservoirs by producing H2S. Biocides are frequently added to drilling fluids and produced water to control their growth and mitigate their detrimental effects.
