Iron-oxidizing bacteria

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002041

Microorganisms that obtain energy by oxidizing ferrous iron to ferric iron, often leading to the formation of insoluble iron oxides and hydroxides. In oilfield operations, these bacteria can cause corrosion of metallic equipment and plug pipelines or wellbores by forming deposits. They thrive in aerobic or microaerobic conditions.
