An abbreviation for Solid Rocket Booster, a large rocket motor that uses a solid propellant mixture to provide high thrust for a short duration. SRBs are used to augment the main engines of a launch vehicle during liftoff and initial ascent. For reusable systems, post-flight maintenance involves recovering the booster, disassembling it, inspecting the motor casing for stress, and refurbishing the nozzle and avionics before it is reloaded with new propellant.
