Sustainer

The main engine of a rocket stage that keeps burning after the booster engines have shut down and been jettisoned, supplying thrust for the rest of the powered ascent. Atlas missiles and early Atlas launch vehicles used this arrangement, with one sustainer engine on the centreline and two booster engines on the sides that dropped away after liftoff.
