Strap-on

Referring to solid rocket boosters or liquid fuel tanks that are attached to the exterior of a larger launch vehicle to provide additional thrust during liftoff and initial ascent. These components are typically jettisoned once their fuel is expended. The Space Shuttle used two large solid rocket boosters as strap-ons.
