Inelastic neutron scattering
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001971
A nuclear interaction where a high-energy neutron collides with an atomic nucleus, loses a discrete amount of energy, and changes direction. The energy loss excites the nucleus, which then de-excites by emitting a gamma ray characteristic of that element. This process is used in pulsed neutron logging to determine the elemental composition of the formation, particularly carbon and oxygen.
