Elastic neutron scattering
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001261
A nuclear interaction that forms the primary measurement principle of neutron porosity logging tools. High-energy neutrons emitted from a tool source collide with atomic nuclei in the formation, transferring a portion of their energy in a process analogous to billiard ball collisions. The energy loss is greatest in collisions with hydrogen nuclei, which have a mass nearly equal to that of a neutron, making the tool highly sensitive to the amount of hydrogen and thus to formation porosity.
