Slowing-down time
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003460
The interval required for a high-energy neutron, emitted from a logging tool source, to lose energy through collisions with atomic nuclei in the formation until it reaches thermal energy levels. This moderation process is particularly sensitive to hydrogen concentration because the mass of a neutron is nearly equal to that of a proton. The slowing-down length, a related parameter, measures the average distance a neutron travels during this time before capture.
