Spontaneous potential
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003548
A naturally occurring electrical potential difference measured in a borehole between an electrode in the drilling fluid and a reference electrode at the surface. This potential arises primarily from electrochemical reactions between formation fluids and the drilling mud, and electrokinetic effects. The spontaneous potential log is used to identify permeable formations and estimate formation water salinity.
