SP
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003523
An abbreviation for spontaneous potential, a passive well logging measurement that records the natural electrical potential difference between an electrode in the borehole and a surface electrode. This potential is primarily generated by electrochemical activity between the drilling fluid and formation waters, and by electrokinetic effects. The SP log is used to identify permeable beds, determine formation water resistivity, and estimate shale content.
