An abbreviation for sodium polyacrylate, a polymer used as a fluid loss additive and viscosifier in water-based drilling fluids. This synthetic polymer, often supplied as a white powder, is added to control the loss of filtrate to the formation by creating an effective filter cake. Different grades of SPA are available to provide filtration control with minimal impact on fluid rheology.
