Chemical potential
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000652
A measure of the change in a system's free energy when a substance is added, expressed per mole of that substance. In reservoir engineering, it governs the direction of mass transfer, as molecules move from regions of higher chemical potential to regions of lower potential until equilibrium is reached. This thermodynamic property is a key parameter in modeling phase behavior, miscible displacement, and compositional fluid flow in reservoirs.
