Chemical oxygen demand

A measure of the amount of oxygen required to chemically oxidize organic and inorganic matter in a water sample. In drilling fluids, it indicates the concentration of oxidizable substances, which can be relevant for environmental discharge regulations. COD is expressed in milligrams of oxygen consumed per liter of sample (mg/L).
