Total organic carbon
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003874
A measure of the amount of carbon present in a rock sample that is bound in organic compounds, rather than in inorganic carbonates. It is a key indicator of a rock's potential as a hydrocarbon source rock, as higher TOC values suggest a greater abundance of organic material available for conversion into oil and gas. TOC is typically expressed as a weight percentage of the rock.
