Source rock

A fine-grained sedimentary rock, typically rich in organic matter, that generates and expels hydrocarbons when subjected to sufficient heat and pressure over geological time. Common source rocks include organic-rich shales and limestones. The quality of a source rock is assessed by its total organic carbon (TOC) content.
