Carbonate gamma ray
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000546
A gamma ray log measurement interpreted in carbonate formations, where the relationship between radioactivity and shale content differs from that in clastic rocks. Unlike shales, which are rich in potassium and thorium, some clean carbonates exhibit high gamma ray readings due to the presence of uranium associated with organic matter or specific depositional conditions. A spectral gamma ray tool separates the total count into contributions from potassium (K), uranium (U), and thorium (Th) to distinguish radioactive carbonates from shales.
