Total organic carbon, a measure of the amount of organic material present in a rock, expressed as a weight percentage. High TOC values, typically above 0.5% to 1.0%, indicate a potential source rock for hydrocarbons. It is a key parameter in evaluating the petroleum generation potential of shales and other fine-grained sediments.
