Anaerobic

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000114

Describing an environment or process that occurs in the absence of free oxygen. In geology, anaerobic conditions are common in deep marine sediments or stagnant water bodies where organic matter accumulates and is preserved. These conditions are favorable for the formation of source rocks, as the lack of oxygen prevents the complete decomposition of organic material by aerobic bacteria.
