Preservation
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002908
The processes that prevent the degradation or destruction of organic matter after its deposition, allowing it to transform into kerogen and eventually hydrocarbons. Favorable conditions include rapid burial and an anoxic (oxygen-poor) environment, which limit decomposition by bacteria and oxidation. The degree of preservation determines the quality and richness of a source rock, directly affecting its potential to generate oil or gas.
