Coal

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000721

An organic sedimentary rock that forms from the accumulation and compaction of plant matter in an oxygen-deficient environment over geological time. Progressive burial, heat, and pressure transform the organic material through stages from peat to lignite, sub-bituminous, bituminous, and finally anthracite coal. In petroleum systems, coal beds are a primary source rock for natural gas, known as coalbed methane, and can also act as reservoirs for that gas.
