Swamp

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003719

A type of wetland environment characterized by saturated soils or standing water and dominated by woody vegetation such as trees and shrubs. In a geologic context, ancient swamps are recognized as major depositional environments for the accumulation of thick layers of plant matter. Over geologic time, the burial and heating of this organic material leads to the formation of coal and the kerogen found in hydrocarbon source rocks.
