Kerogen
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002091
Dispersed organic matter in sedimentary rocks that is insoluble in common organic solvents and has not yet been converted to petroleum or natural gas. It is the precursor to hydrocarbons, undergoing thermal maturation over geological time to generate oil and gas. Kerogen is classified into types I, II, III, and IV based on its elemental composition and hydrocarbon potential.
