Metagenesis

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002325

The last stage of thermal evolution of organic matter in source rocks, following catagenesis, reached at temperatures above roughly 150 to 200 degrees Celsius and vitrinite reflectance above about 2 percent. Remaining kerogen and residual oil crack mainly to dry gas, chiefly methane, and the organic residue becomes increasingly carbon rich. It precedes the onset of metamorphism of the host rock.
