Vitrinite

A maceral group in coal and dispersed organic matter, derived primarily from the woody tissues of plants. It is the most abundant maceral in humic coals and forms through the diagenetic alteration of cellulose and lignin. Vitrinite content and its reflectance are used to assess the thermal maturity of source rocks.
