Maturation
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002299
The natural process by which organic matter within source rocks is transformed into hydrocarbons (oil and gas) due to increasing temperature and pressure over geological time. This thermal alteration involves complex chemical reactions that break down kerogen into progressively lighter hydrocarbon compounds. The degree of maturation is often quantified by vitrinite reflectance measurements.
