Convection

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000843

The transfer of heat through the movement of fluids, such as liquids or gases, driven by density differences. In the Earth's mantle, convection currents are responsible for plate tectonics, influencing basin formation and hydrocarbon migration. In sedimentary basins, it can affect the thermal maturation of organic matter into oil and gas.
