Primary migration

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004422

The initial movement of hydrocarbons from their source rock into adjacent carrier beds or reservoir rocks. This process occurs after the organic matter in the source rock has reached sufficient thermal maturity to generate oil and gas. Primary migration is driven by pressure gradients and buoyancy, and it typically involves the expulsion of hydrocarbons through microfractures or along bedding planes.
