Describing organic matter in source rocks that has not yet reached the temperature and pressure conditions required to generate hydrocarbons. This material is still in the early stages of diagenesis and has not undergone sufficient thermal alteration. Immature source rocks have a low thermal maturity index, indicating their limited hydrocarbon generation potential.
