Overmature

Describing a source rock that has been subjected to temperatures and pressures beyond the optimal window for oil and gas generation. In this state, most hydrocarbons have been expelled or thermally degraded into dry gas or graphite. Overmature source rocks have a very low hydrogen index and are typically found at great depths.
