Overpressure

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002659

Pore fluid pressure that exceeds the normal hydrostatic pressure expected at a given depth, which is the pressure exerted by a continuous column of formation water to the surface. This condition arises from mechanisms such as rapid sediment deposition, hydrocarbon generation, or tectonic compression, which prevent fluids from escaping as the rock compacts. Overpressure gradients are expressed in pounds per square inch per foot (psi/ft) or specific gravity, with normal hydrostatic pressure being around 0.433 psi/ft for fresh water.
