Geostatic pressure
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001690
The pressure exerted by the weight of the overlying rock column at a given depth in the Earth's subsurface. It is also known as overburden pressure and is calculated by integrating the density of the rock formations from the surface to the depth of interest. Geostatic pressure typically increases with depth at a gradient of approximately 1.0 psi/ft (22.6 kPa/m).
