Pressure gradient
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002918
The rate at which pressure changes with respect to distance, particularly with vertical depth in the subsurface. In petroleum geology, this concept applies to the fluids in the pore spaces (pore pressure gradient) and the rock column itself (lithostatic or overburden gradient). The pressure gradient is a vector quantity, and its magnitude dictates the direction and rate of fluid flow through permeable rock.
