Pressure gradient

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002119

  1. The rate and direction of change of pressure in space, written as the gradient of pressure, which points toward higher pressure. Horizontally it is often quoted in hectopascals per 100 km. The pressure gradient force acts in the opposite direction, from high to low pressure, and closely spaced isobars mean a steep gradient and stronger wind.

  2. The amount of pressure change occurring over a given distance.
