Thermal gradient

The rate of change of temperature with respect to distance in a particular direction. In the atmosphere, it describes how temperature varies spatially, either horizontally or vertically. A strong thermal gradient indicates a rapid change in temperature over a short distance, which can drive atmospheric circulation and frontal development.
